HMS Association at the Battle of Vigo Bay 1702
HMS Association in the early hours of 23rd October 1702, 5 years before its wrecking, and the events of the previous painting. Here, Association is part of an English-Dutch fleet that have tracked Spanish and French ships to Vigo Bay in Northern Spain. The assault on the combined French-Spanish fleet was an overwhelming victory resulting in all the defending fleet’s ships being either burnt or captured. Association is in the foreground, attacking a battery of guns at the entrance to the harbour. Just ahead is the Dutch ship De Zeven Provinciën (1694), and off the right is HMS Torbay ablaze, having been the first to break through the barricade of lashed-together masts and yards.
HMS Association on the evening of 22nd October 1707
This is HMS Association depicted in the early evening of 22nd October 1707, hours before she was wrecked off the Isles of Scilly in one of Britain’s worst maritime disasters. The event inspired a solution to the longitude problem that had eluded navigators for many years.
